How to Build an E-Commerce Business Fast – and Take the Advantage of the Crisis

Although we cannot fully determine the consequences of the coronavirus crisis yet, it is already clear that some branches will change for good. It is no wonder that online shopping increased in popularity after the closing of brick-and-mortar stores. But this trend is likely to continue even after the loosening of the restrictions imposed in connection with the pandemic.

In many different countries all over the world, the percentage of online purchases is increasing very quickly. The collapse of offline shopping forces businesses to bolster their position in the online world in various aspects. They refine their e-shops or start from the very bottom by setting up brand new ones.

If you have the impression that setting up a new online platform requires a lot of money and takes ages, you are wrong. You can build your own e-commerce business effectively in the blink of an eye. In this article, you will find a few recommendations that enable even bigger firms (for example from the traditional offline branches) to get their online business running in less than 4 months.

Pragmatic Approach

Focus just on the key and factual aspects. What are your best-selling products and services? What brings you the highest profit margin? Which products do the customers usually buy together with the best-selling ones? These and other questions are necessary to answer before you start build

ing your e-shop.

Everything needs to be applicable to practice to shorten the time you spend doing pointless things. There is no sense in including every single product of yours in the e-shop if you offer 1000 of them.

One extra product = an extra category = more complicated website layout = extra work = extra time!

If you operate in multiple countries, it is better to start in a smaller market. In the first few months after the launch, you smooth the imperfections of the website and create an efficient order processing system. With a prepared layout, you can expand to the rest of the markets more easily.

Divide Responsibilities, not just the Tasks

Form teams responsible for the preparation of the individual parts and do not let them do it their way. If you can, try to avoid external companies. The cooperation with them and between them (if you hire more than one) takes way longer than using your own internal teams.

The teams should cover the technical and design aspect of the website, products, marketing, and coordination of activities such as warehousing, packing, transport, and other specific concerns of the industry you operate in.

Determine an exact scope of activity for every team to prevent them from having unnecessary conflicts and interfering with each other. At the same, for the teams, it is advisable to meet on a daily or weekly basis to inform each other about the work they have done so far and to plan the following steps they are about to take.

Learn and Adapt

For the right measurement and evaluation of the results, it is important to have your KPI (Key Performance Indicator) set up from the very beginning. It is better to rather focus on small-scale metrics since total conversions and the conversions from the individual sources will not help you to fully get to know your customers, their shopping habits, problems, and needs.

Use a more detailed customer segmentation, monitor, what they buy or what kind of functions of your website they use. According to that, test further possibilities to make their shopping more pleasant and increase the efficiency of the execution and delivery of the orders. Be aware of the fact that this cycle never ends. People change constantly and you need to lend an ear to keep pace with their expectations.
